Religion is the main theme that emerges quite strongly throughout the novel of purple hibiscus. European missionaries took Christianity to Nigeria. They tried to convert local people from their traditional religious practices to follow Christianity, the ‘true’ religion. The novel is divided into 4 distinct sections and they are not in chronological order. The reference to Palm Sunday in part 1 is significant. It refers to what the children are going to go through, just like Palm Sunday was the start of Christ’s passion in order to save us all, Jaja’s rebellion in chapter 1 takes place in order to gain freedom. Kambili and her family are Catholics and she Jaja both attend Catholic schools. Papa uses religion as a form of oppression throughout the novel; he controls rigidly everything they do and punishes them severely to save them from the â€Å"burning fires of hell.† We are aware of Papa’s violence from the opening lines of the book, â€Å"he flung his heavy missal across the room and broke the figurines. Papa has a very rigid character and can almost be considered as a religious fanatic. This clear when â€Å"he pressed hard on each forehead to make a perfect cross.† He is a very devout Catholic who dominates his family and imposes religion on them. It is as if he almost does not feel worthy to receive the host, he kneels to receive communion and shuts his eyes, â€Å"so hard hid face tightened into a grimace. † We also learn that he has won a human rights award and modestly did not want to be featured in his own newspaper, this shows his admirable qualities, he is a man of principle and courage. He is also highly respected by the community. Papa is a complex yet contradictory character. He lashes out with his belt when he discovers Kambili eating before mass crying out, â€Å"Has the devil built a tent in my house? † He shows no humanity but afterwards he seems to be ashamed and asks, â€Å"Why do you like sin? † Eugene seems to see Nigeria as ruled by godless men and sees people like his father as â€Å"heathens† who will go to hell. He will not allow his father to enter his house and tells his children not to touch his food or drink. Papa allows to religion to rule his life, â€Å"finally, for twenty minutes, Papa prayed for our protection from ungodly people.† It is as if Kambili is conditioned by her father, everything seems to be a sin in her eyes, â€Å"I had never seen anyone undress; it was sinful to look upon another person’s nakedness. † When she visits Papa Nnukwu she examines him, â€Å"I had examined him that day, too, looking away when his eyes met mine, for signs of difference, of Godlessness. I didn’t see any, but I was sure they were somewhere. † Later on in Nsukka, when Kambili sees Papa Nnukwu praying, it changes her opinion, it is an eye-opener. This episode play an important part in her change, she realises that religions at hearts are all the same. She is touched by what she sees, for Papa Nnukwu religion is something that makes him happy, it does not suffocate him. Kambili’s faith extends beyond the boundaries of one religion as she realises that Papa Nnukwu is a traditionalist who follows the rituals of his ancestors and believes in a pantheistic model of religion. Though both his son and daughter converted to Catholicism, Papa Nnukwu held onto his roots. 20 Back at home, religion plays a key role in their daily routines; prayer time, grace before meals, rosary, mass. This contrasts greatly with the atmosphere of religion at aunty Ifeoma’s house. Kambili is surprised when her aunt prays for â€Å"peace and laughter. † Also whilst praying, they break into Igbo songs which initially makes Kambili and Jaja uncomfortable, â€Å"Morning and night prayers were always peppered with†¦ Igbo praise songs. † Fr. Amadi is young and ‘handsome’ Catholic priest; he is a close friend to Ifeoma and her family. He is the first black priest Kambili has ever known. Kambili develops a passion for Father Amadi because he is kind and gentle to her and takes a personal interest, ‘I looked up to find Father Amadi’s eyes on me. ’ Kambili is, without understanding why she feels as she does, sexually drawn to his pleasant manliness. This of course can never be properly reciprocated because Father Amadi is a Catholic priest, which means he is a celibate. Fr. Amadi is a great contrast to Fr. Benedict, the priest of Enugu who is praised and accepted by Papa. Father Benedict is the cold, white priest at St. Agnes who rigidly hears Kambili’s confessions. He turns a blind eye to Papa’s violence at home because of Papa’s ‘good works’ and cash donations to the Church. He represents the stereotypical type of priest, whereas Father Amadi shows Kambili that religion is not simply a set of rules but rather a way of life. Amaka and Kambili’s faith are challenged. Amaka, after much deliberation and stubbornness, decides to not take an English confirmation name, ‘I told you I am not taking an English name, Father. ’ She does not participate in the ceremony; she is making a statement for Nigerian identity. Like Jaja, she breaks from her faith. When Kambili visits Aokpe, she claims to see the Virgin Mary. She sees her in the tree, in the sun, and in the smile of every man. For Kambili, God is truly everywhere. As she realises with Father Amadi, faith does not only occur in sanctified places. He speaks through nature and goodness. Kambili’s journey of faith comes to a close here, she will always be devout, but not in the same way Papa is. It is significant that when Jaja rebels he uses religion – at the end he turns the weapon round uses it against Papa by not receiving communion as the â€Å"wafer gives me bad breath† and the priest touching his mouth â€Å"nauseates† him. Jaja’s rebellion is continuous, even after his father’s death. He rejects religion as it is linked too closely to his father oppressive rule. Jaja is almost oppressed by his desire to rebel; he is not at peace with himself. Jaja has become bitter to the world – a negative Jaja.

They often get adapted into films , h owever much beloved novels and the subsequent adaptions are often met with criticism. Such criticism has created much debate and discussion among fans and critics on which version is better . An example of a popular novel adapted into a film is Esio Trot written by Roald Dahl. Even this book adaption caused many discussions online. However, after such debate it can be argued that t he 2015 movie, Esio Trot, creates a better plot, dialogue and contains visual features. Published in 1990, Esio T rot is a story about an old man (shy Mr Hoppy) and his love for a neighbour ( M s Silver ) . Sadly , it was one of Roald Dahl's last stories which was created when buying tortoises were banned in pet shops. The novel has been re-established into a romantic/comedy movie directed by Dearbhla Wals h for entertainment. The film version is more engaging as the director has made several differences to the plot. A differ ence in the plot is when Ms Silver finds out that Mr Hoppy was replacing Alfie (the original tortoise ) . In contrast , i f a child was to read the literary version , they would believe that they could get away with lying. Furthermore, t h e movie proves that you don't have to lie to achieve your goal which is a great message for the future generation. In addition, t he novel is only 63 pages in length and the movie is approximately 1hour and 30min which allows new characters and a change in plot. In particular, Mr Pringles who was definitely needed to create an engaging story . He was the character that told Ms Silver that Mr Hoppy was replacing her original tortoise ( Ms Silver never found out in the novel ) . T herefore, including a new character to be the messenger' was a great idea. The dialogue in this movie helps to define Roald Dahl's characters more than the book . Mr Pringles (who is cocky selfish) always talks about himself. As a matter of fact , Mr Pringles invited himself to Mr Hoppy's house (for dinner) where he talked about himself from when he was born to his age now (which is quite old). In fact, j ust before he stood up from the chair addressing he had to leave, he asked Mr Hoppy to talk about his life. As soon as Mr Hoppy started, Mr Pringles got up said "Well, I better get going, maybe we can do this again sometime and you could tell me all about yourself." This informs the audience that Mr Pringles is very self-obnoxious. Furthermore, h is personality is not achieved through the literary version as he was not existent. Moreover, M r Hoppy's dialogue informs the audience that he is a simple - keep to himself - shy - man which is evident as the conversations he has with others is very simple. For example, w he n he interacts with Ms Silver, he barely says anything. He would start the conversation with "Hello Ms Silver, lovely day it is, isn't it?" which is mostly what he says while interacting with others ( unless he is asked a question). Finally, Ms Silver's dialogue gives us a feeling that she enjoys interacting with others as she talks very often smiles a lot. Although dialogue is evident through the book, the movie creates a better understanding as the audience can see facial expressions. For instance, t he book shows the reader Ms Silvers dialogue, but, doesn't give the audience her kind-smiling expression. Visual features included in the film help create a better understanding of the characters (Mr Hoppy, Ms Silver Mr Pringles). For example, Mr Hoppy wears the sa me style clothes every day which creates the affect that Mr Hoppy is not very 'outgoing' is 'shy'. The world trembled when America dropped the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The world trembled once again years later, but this time to the heavy steps of Godzilla. Along with him came his highly radioactive body leaving trails of radioactive residue. His main abilities were his plasma breath ray, immunity to normal weapons, and great strength. He was created for a horror movie that showed the effect of what worried the Japanese at the time- Nuclear weapons. In the movie, he represents pure evil, destroying everything in his path. He is, however, only a product of mankind, and cannot help that fact. What drew the great beast from the ocean depths? Godzilla was created by H-Bomb testing at Bikini Atoll, 1954. The director of the film was inspired after the radioactive fallout from the test scorched a Japanese fishing vessel, The Lucky Dragon, with deadly effects. They were supposedly in a "safe" zone. Many of its crew were seriously burned and despite intensive medical care, one man on the Lucky Dragon died from radiation sickness. In the Godzilla movie, originally named Gojira, the director ended the movie with a lesson that the American producer cut out. After the failure of conventional arms, a horrible but non-atomic weapon puts an end to Godzilla's wrath, and unlike the Americans and their H-bombs, the Japanese destroy the secret of their super-weapon, saving future generations. Why did they cut that out? Could it have anything to do with the biological weapons testing on Bikini Atoll? At the end of World War II, the United States was granted control over 29 Atolls and five islands that compose the Marshall Islands. At that time, Harry S. Truman decided that the testing of nuclear weapons would be necessary "to de... ...? A man named Kitamura sees Godzilla's message over the years as being very simple: "I think when you look back over time at the bad things that people do to each other, that countries do to each other, and that races do to each other you will see that they are pretty much unchanging. Although Godzilla gets his message across in a very strange way, by destroying everything in sight, basically what he is saying is don't hurt other people, don't do bad things. "I think that people are basically very small beings, and it is because we are small beings that we fight amongst each other. Our country Is not perfect nor do many of the people around you see the optimistic side in the united States of America. On the other hand we, united States citizens, have so many opportunities and should be optimistic. In my eyes people are being prepared for all the negative things that are going to occur, and do not see how incredible our nation is.The other day we found out that our government had shut down because both parties couldn't come to an agreement to settle money situations. Most people saw this to be ridiculous and something that should not had happened. Yes this is an unfortunate obstacle our country faced but on the other hand there were many uplifting contributions people had done. For example Chris Cox went to Washington DC and gathered people to clean the memorials and how a Phoenix food bank gave lad to workers affected by Grand Canyon being closed.Personally I'm not very Intrigued by the government, but I am optimistic about the new advancements In technology, w hich also leads us to new medical cures and procedures created for people living longer, which branches out with many positive advantages to be living in America. With tons of new technology being improved and invented now for the future, it creates a wanting sensation for people being interested to know the new advancement.Whether it's the phone c or new x-ray machinery to find a clearer look at bones, people will be optimistic for the future. By 2020 there will be over hundreds of new technologies, not to mention the United States will have a whole new tank mechanism for our soldiers fighting in war. The new technology brings on new experiences and less hardships In America, because there will be more assurance that the people are safe. Everything Is becoming more and more convenient for our everyday life styles and how Is that not exciting.Our countries opportunities for new technology are extraordinary, and so are our medical advancements and improvements. With new technologies brings on new medical advantages. â€Å"Humans by 2050 will have a life expectancy of 89-94 years old compared to the life expectancy now which is 83-85 years old. † (Cox). There is other evidence that medical technology will be created because day by day doctors and scientist are experimenting to have cures for some types of cancer.By 2018 there possibly will be a cure to prostate cancer. Today 29,720 men die a year from this devastating disease, which is very unfortunate. Possibly In the future your son, father, or grandpa will be able to survive from such a awful disease that changes people's lives, because there will be a treatment to cure his cancer. Death is scary and we try to safe people's lives every day and that Is the reason to be optimistic about our future because people will be able to live longer with new medical advancements our every day lives.Not only do the hundreds of advancements help Just the United States bu t it gives us the opportunities for third world countries to have some of the fortunate advantages that we take for granite.
